2010s/Graffiti/Midnight Tagging
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
Part of a 3-piece series, Midnight Tagging depicts the young Mr. Soapski, then Urban Artist SOAP. The three paintings are dreamy memory flashes representing the hundreds of “SOAP” tags, many of them no longer present in the physical reality. Midnight is a magical time when one day ends and another is born, symbolising the cyclical nature of our life. This piece captures tagging at this special time of the night. Mr. Soapski’s craft is born out of rebellion, relentless practice and struggle. Day and night. Always remembering where he comes from.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
It is always darkest under the lamp. This depiction of young Mr. Soapski spray-painting his signature “SOAP” tag under the cover of night, yet in full spotlight, is a highlight and a hint to a deeply personal story of lifelong passion, rebellion and belonging. SOAP is captured across the paintings in three slightly different positions, with variations in lighting and colours. In this context this 3-piece series celebrates the artist Mr. Soapski himself. In a one-off twist Mr. Soapski’s signature “Little Adam”, the avatar representing himself in his art, became the focal point. Those familiar with the graffiti subculture of the early 2000’s will pick up many references, notably in Big Adam’s clothing. The series tells the story of the origins, expressing the nostalgia of Mr. Soapski’s formative years in post-communist Poland, creating street art under the cover of night, running from the police, the excitement of being out there to show the world symbols and artistic skill. All this richness is represented by the simple act of tagging, telling a complex story through a powerful symbol.
OBSERVATIONS
This piece features Mr. Soapski’s signature “Little Adam”, the avatar representing himself in his art. Here Little Adam, in an unusual twist, is not little. He becomes “Little Big Adam” and is the focus of the painting. This focus is meant to highlight the artist’s origins and tell a very personal story. Little Adam represents the importance of the connection with self, being a part of our life’s work, yet letting our creations outgrow us. Little Adam’s message is simple: love and value yourself, immerse yourself in work, stay humble, have fun.
